How to Appear in Google AI Overviews: An SEO and GEO Guide

By Akın Tığlı · September 1, 2026

Google Search is no longer just blue links. AI Overviews and AI Mode can draw on different sources to produce AI-supported answers to complex questions. For brands, the new goal is to be among the reliable sources supporting those answers, as well as ranking on the first page.

What is Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are AI-supported summaries Google presents above results for some searches. They outline a subject and may display links to supporting web sources for further detail. AI Mode offers a conversational experience for more complex needs such as comparisons, research and multi-step questions.

According to Google’s official explanation, these features may use “query fan-out,” generating related searches for different aspects of a question simultaneously. This creates visibility opportunities for pages answering more specific related questions, as well as the main query.

Do you need a separate GEO system for AI Overviews?

Google explicitly states that AI Overviews and AI Mode require no special application, schema type or different technical standard. Fundamental SEO practices remain relevant in AI-powered search. A page must first be crawlable, indexable and eligible to display a snippet in Google Search.

SELECTIONOriginal information, appropriate coverage and reliability
RESULTThe possibility of becoming a source in AI answers

GEO can be a useful term for explaining the strategy, but should not be treated as a set of “AI tricks” disconnected from conventional SEO. Content that offers genuine value and accessible web infrastructure remain the foundation of lasting visibility.

1. Become technically discoverable first

If Google cannot crawl and index a page properly, it cannot use it in AI features. Start with these essential checks:

  • The page must not be blocked by robots.txt or a noindex tag.
  • The canonical URL should point to the correct page.
  • Keep the XML sitemap current.
  • JavaScript errors must not hide the main content.
  • Provide adequate mobile layout, speed and page experience.
  • Make headings, links and navigation understandable.
  • Reduce unnecessary content duplication across similar pages.

Technical SEO alone does not guarantee selection as a source, but other work has limited impact if content cannot be discovered.

2. Create original, experience-based content

AI can easily summarize common knowledge. Content that simply rearranges points from other pages therefore becomes less distinctive. Google’s current guidance particularly emphasizes “non-commodity” content with original perspectives and first-hand experience.

For Sosyal Zeplin, this means real campaign experience, location productions, industry observations, measurement results, original comparisons and implemented strategies. A problem observed in a hotel’s direct-booking journey or a healthcare brand’s multilingual content architecture may offer more source value than a generic list of ten SEO tips.

3. Address search intent and related questions together

AI-powered searches go beyond a single keyword. “How do you do health tourism SEO in Antalya?” may raise questions about target countries, multilingual site structure, treatment content, trust signals, local visibility and measurement.

Rather than create a separate weak page for every possible query, divide the main topic logically, turn subtopics with genuinely distinct intent into supporting articles and connect them through internal links. We explain the foundations in our guide to semantic SEO and topical authority .

4. Answer clearly without artificially fragmenting content

Headings reflecting genuine user questions and opening paragraphs answering directly improve readability and understanding. But content does not have to be split into tiny pieces just for AI. Google states that its systems can understand different subjects and semantic relationships within a page.

There is no ideal page length either. Content should fully answer the question while staying focused enough to avoid repetition. Users should leave with the answer, context and next step they need.

5. Demonstrate E-E-A-T and brand authority

Who owns the content matters especially in health, finance and expensive decisions. Clearly show the author, expertise, publication and update dates, organizational contact details and reliable sources where needed.

Experience and expertise should be supported by case studies, real projects, training, publications and consistent third-party references, rather than just claimed. Profiles such as Akın Tığlı’s expertise and experience page explain the connection between content and its expert creator.

6. Make images and video part of the content

Google’s AI features may show relevant images and videos alongside web links. Original photography, explanatory graphics and professional video make experience visible where words fall short, particularly in tourism, healthcare communication and production.

  • Publish images with descriptive filenames.
  • Alternative text should describe the actual image content.
  • Serve images in efficient formats such as WebP or AVIF.
  • Videos should have a title, description, captions and relevant page link.
  • Images and videos should directly relate to the page topic.

Producing material that shows your own processes and experience, rather than adding only stock images, strengthens originality.

7. Use structured data with realistic expectations

Structured data such as Article, Organization, Person, BreadcrumbList and, where appropriate, FAQPage helps explain entities and relationships on a page. However, Google states that there is no special schema for AI Overviews and structured data is not required for AI visibility.

Schema should mark up only accurate information visible on the page. Adding hidden claims, repeatedly generating the same schema type or treating markup as a ranking guarantee is wrong.

8. Keep local business and service details current

Google Business Profile brings together local signals such as address, phone, hours, category, service area, photos and reviews. Healthcare organizations, hotels, restaurants and local service brands should keep website and Business Profile information consistent.

For detailed queries such as “boutique hotel with sunset views in Kaş” or “dental clinic serving international patients in Antalya,” explain actual service features, location context and decision-making information, as well as the city name.

9. Keep content up to date

Republishing old content with a new date is not a genuine update. When prices, rules, product features, platform functions or statistics change, review the text, rewrite relevant sections and change the update date only after meaningful revisions.

An editorial review schedule in dynamic fields such as health and tourism helps prevent inaccurate or outdated information reaching users. Currency also demonstrates the brand’s responsibility for its content.

How is AI Overviews visibility measured?

Google states that generative AI performance data in Search Console can provide insight into discovery through AI features. Assess conventional performance data alongside it:

  • Changes in impressions, clicks and average position
  • Visibility from detailed, natural-language queries
  • Searches combining the brand name and service
  • Organic landing-page and conversion performance
  • Phone calls, forms, WhatsApp, bookings and quote requests
  • Source citations and links from reliable websites

AI Overviews do not appear for every search, and displayed links can change. Track regular visibility and real business outcomes rather than a screenshot of one query.

Common misconceptions about AI Overviews

  • “Adding llms.txt will get me into Google AI.” Google says it does not use llms.txt for inclusion in AI features.
  • “There is a special GEO schema code.” AI Overviews needs no special schema or markup.
  • “I must create a page for every long query.” Large numbers of low-value pages may constitute scaled content abuse.
  • “AI-generated content is automatically penalized.” Quality, originality and purpose matter, rather than the production tool.
  • “Once optimized, visibility is guaranteed.” Crawling, indexing and selection as a source in AI answers cannot be guaranteed.
  • “GEO has replaced SEO.” Google’s AI features use its core search and quality systems; SEO remains foundational.

A ten-point AI Overviews checklist

  1. Check indexingConfirm that Google can crawl and index the page.
  2. Identify search intentList the main question and genuine subquestions affecting the user’s decision.
  3. Add an original contributionInclude experience, cases, data, opinions, images or an actionable process.
  4. Make the answer visibleGive clear, direct answers below headings.
  5. Build a topic clusterConnect main guides with meaningful supporting content and service pages.
  6. Identify the expertClearly show author, experience, sources and update details.
  7. Improve technical qualityImprove mobile experience, speed, canonicals and site architecture.
  8. Add images and videoUse relevant, explained and optimized media.
