How Can a Brand Grow as Clicks Decline? SEO, GEO and Zero-Click Marketing

By Akın Tığlı · October 6, 2026

Must users visit your website to get to know you? Today they can watch a clinician’s video on Instagram, explore a hotel’s location on Google Maps or ask AI about a service. By the time they arrive on the site, much of their research may already be complete. That is why my marketing question is not just ‘How many people visited?’ but ‘Where did the right people discover us, and what helped them decide?’

Why is a traffic report insufficient on its own?

For a long time, digital marketing centred on visitors: create content, run ads and take people to a page. This remains necessary, but does not reveal the entire customer relationship. As research spreads across platforms, one website’s Analytics report records only the visible part of the journey.

A loss of visitors certainly deserves investigation. But declaring ‘SEO does not work’ without understanding the cause, or blaming every decline on AI, is wrong. Technical problems, ranking losses, seasonality, changing search demand and new results-page features require separate assessment.

What do the data tell us—and not tell us?

SparkToro’s study using Similarweb data found that 68.01% of US Google searches in January–April 2026 ended without a click. It covered desktop and mobile browsers, not Google’s mobile app. This must not be read as traffic loss across every sector in Türkiye. A search ending without a click and a brand losing revenue are different measurements.

Pew Research Center’s study of 900 US adults in March 2025 found clicks on traditional results on 8% of search pages with AI summaries, versus 15% without. Links within summaries received clicks in 1% of cases. These are findings from a particular period and sample, not conversion forecasts for every query.

I see these data as a signal to broaden our customer contact points, rather than a call to abandon the website.

What is zero-click marketing?

Zero-click marketing can be understood as helping people gain meaningful value and build a relationship with a brand on the platform they already use. Content should answer a question, support a decision or improve understanding even without a visit to another page.

A hotel video, for example, should not merely show beautiful scenery and say ‘details on our website’. Explain clearly whom it suits, how to get there and which needs the stay meets. Keep the booking link, but make the video itself useful too.

A dentist’s educational content should likewise answer the basic question within the post. It can explain when an examination is needed without turning general information into personal treatment advice. Clear knowledge, expertise and boundaries provide a stronger basis for health communication than curiosity gaps created for clicks.

Where do SEO and GEO fit?

SEO covers work enabling search engines to find, understand and present pages in relevant searches. GEO is a term for helping a brand and its information appear understandably, accurately and reliably in generative AI answers. I treat these as different uses of one information foundation rather than disconnected projects.

Adding ‘GEO content’ to a site with unclear services, unidentified experts or technically inaccessible pages is not a sufficient strategy. First explain the service, business and expertise clearly. In our SEO and GEO work , this is why we consider technical structure, content quality and brand consistency together.

Appearing in an AI answer does not automatically turn users into customers. Assess whether it describes the brand accurately, for which questions it appears and whether the subsequent experience is trustworthy. Manual checks with specific questions are useful, but cannot establish a definitive visibility percentage representing all users.

Provide value on the platform, support decisions on the website

The website’s role is not disappearing. Someone who discovered you in a video may still want details before booking. They need fast pages, clear service scope, correct contact information and an easy transaction flow. Web designis the infrastructure that meets generated interest with accurate information, not just visual presentation.

Plan two needs when producing content. The platform post should complete the basic answer. The web page should provide decision details such as fuller explanations, suitability, pricing method, process and enquiry steps. Adapt material to each platform rather than copying the same content everywhere.

Examples for healthcare, tourism and local businesses

  • Clinic: An educational video answers the main question; the site explains clinician credentials, assessment and appointments.
  • Hotel: A short video shows the experience and location; the booking page clarifies room options, inclusions and conditions.
  • Local business: Profiles and posts explain the service area; the site describes work offered, process and information needed for a quotation.

These are planning scenarios, not results reports for particular clients.

Which questions should monthly reports answer?

Define the actual business goal before dividing reports by channel. A hotel needs qualified bookings, a B2B service relevant projects, and a clinic enquiries progressing to suitable assessment. The same number of forms may have different value for different businesses.

  • Enquiry quality: Do enquiries match the service? Which progress to a conversation?
  • Brand-search behaviour: How do brand-name queries change? Could seasonality or other campaigns explain increases?
  • Content consumption: Which topics attract viewing time, saves and shares?
  • Sales process: Where are prospects lost between first contact, quotation, appointment and outcome?
  • Customer accounts: Where do people say they saw you, and what influenced their decision?

Direct traffic alone does not prove social content success: visits with lost source information or untagged links can fall into this category. Brand-search growth cannot automatically be credited to one campaign either. These indicators become valuable when interpreted together and in context.

How can we assess conversions without clicks?

Advertising platforms may report a later action by someone who saw but did not click an ad as a view-through conversion. Useful though this is, it does not prove the ad alone caused the action. Users may encounter several channels, attribution windows differ and the same action may appear in multiple reports.

Do not add platform totals together and call them total sales. Use actual transactions in the CRM or booking system as the basis. Keep using UTM tags, distinguish phone and WhatsApp contacts where possible, and make asking about the source routine for sales teams. In healthcare measurement, set boundaries preventing personal health information from entering advertising tools.

With sufficient volume and suitable conditions, controlled geography, audience or time tests can explore incremental impact. Small businesses may find comparable-period reviews, regular CRM notes and campaign logs more practical. In either case, account for concurrent price changes, seasons and other campaigns.

Where should you start this month?

  1. Choose three key customer questions and create content that fully answers each on its platform.
  2. Check scope, trust and enquiry steps on the service pages this content points to.
  3. Do not merely count enquiries: record service relevance, progression to conversations and reasons for loss.
  4. Compare platform metrics with actual business outcomes over the same period.
  5. Plan next month’s budget from the combined evidence rather than one cost-per-click figure.

Digital advertising management, content, SEO and the web experience produce more meaningful reporting when connected. For evaluating medical tourism enquiries in particular, our lead-quality guide develops this approach further.

My approach: understand what happens after visibility

Wanting more visitors is understandable. But making visitors the entire plan can hide relationships formed on platforms and customers’ later research. For me, a strong digital setup provides the right information in the right place, is remembered when needed and delivers a good experience when an enquiry arrives.

That is why we bring SEO, social media, advertising and the website together in one customer journey instead of separate success boxes. We track clicks while also seeking to understand why demand arose, why it was lost and what it contributed to the business.

Frequently asked questions

Does zero-click marketing remove the need for a website?

The website remains important for service details, trust, enquiries, reservations and business-controlled information. Platform content and the site serve complementary needs.

Can sales rise while traffic falls?

Yes, if visitor quality or the conversion experience changes. Rather than assuming this, examine traffic sources, actual sales and enquiry data together.

Should SEO be abandoned for GEO?

No. A technically accessible site, clear service information and reliable content underpin both. Definite outcomes cannot be promised for AI visibility.
