Adding and Setting Up Google Analytics 4 (GA4) on WordPress

By Akın Tığlı · May 3, 2025

Google Analytics 4 measures user behaviour and marketing performance on your website through an event-based model. On WordPress, you can use a plugin, Google Tag Manager or manual code.

1. Create a GA4 Account and Property

Google Analytics : open Admin in your account, create a new property and complete the business information. Then add a Web data stream and enter your website URL.

2. Get the Measurement ID

Go to Admin → Data streams → Web. The screen displays a Measurement ID beginning with G- . This ID connects your WordPress website to the correct GA4 data stream.

3. Ways to Add GA4 to WordPress

Method 1: Site Kit by Google

  1. In the WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New.
  2. Install and activate Site Kit by Google.
  3. Connect your Google account.
  4. Select Analytics and connect your GA4 property.

Method 2: Google Tag Manager

If you manage multiple marketing tags, GTM is a more flexible option. Add the GTM container to WordPress, create a GA4 configuration/Google tag, enter the measurement ID and trigger it on all pages.

Method 3: Manual Code

You can add the Google tag to the theme’s <head> section. To prevent it from disappearing during theme updates, instead of editing header.php directly, use a child theme or a trusted header/footer code manager.

4. Verify Installation

  • Visit your website in a private window.
  • Check your visit in the GA4 Realtime report.
  • Use Google Tag Assistant to confirm that the tag runs only once.
  • If you use cookie consent, test that the analytics tag does not run before permission is granted.

Basic Events and Conversions

Measure business outcomes such as form submissions, phone clicks, WhatsApp links, purchases and reservations as separate events. Mark critical events as “key events” in Admin to use them in advertising and reporting.

Common Mistakes

  • Installing the same GA4 tag twice through both a plugin and the theme
  • Using the wrong property or measurement ID
  • Not separating internal traffic and test visits
  • Ignoring cookie and privacy requirements
  • Not defining conversion events after installation

Conclusion

Site Kit is the easiest option, while Google Tag Manager is the most flexible. Whichever you choose, always verify that the tag fires only once and that real business goals are measured correctly.
